MUSIC.

The Musicians in Malagentia enjoy re-creating the sound of the MIddle Ages and Reniassance. Performing the music of the period adds spice to any SCA event. Hearing the lively and complex pieces offers so much to the atmosphere of an evening feast or a relaxing afternoon between activities. What wonderous things can happen to the players and their audience from the sound of a simple drum and recorder! What extra depth and breadth, when strings and other instruments join in! We enjoy sharing that knowledge with people new to the art. Our goal is to offer to others the skills we've learned. At the same time, we encourage skilled musicians to sit with us and share the experience. As we express ourselves through the music, we hope that it moves others similarly-minded to join us.

COOKING.

What's the deal with Period Cooking, anyway? Everyone knows that all they ate was brown goo, all cooked in one pot and spiced too heavily to cover the taste of the bad meat, right? WRONG!

True medieval cuisine is a wonderful thing. We have surviving recipes from the times of the Romans onward. If you enjoy a chemistry experiment, try going from a translation of the original recipe (which seldom gives exact amounts or times) and recreate a dish that might not have been tasted in hundreds of years. Or try your hand at translating one of the originals, you name the language and there are probably some cooking texts that need you. If you're not that adventurous on the first try, there are lots of good cookbooks and websites that will give you recipes in modern form.

But why bother? A can of beans over a camping stove is a lot easier. Sure it is. It is also a lot easier to go buy everything you might ever need to play SCA. And carpet armor is easier than the real thing. But once you have taken the time and effort to prepare a period meal around your group's campfire and all sat down under the stars to share this recreated medieval experience, you'll be hooked, too.

SCRIBAL ARTS.

(taken, in part, from the new EK Scribes' Handbook, Lady Michel Almond de Champagne, Editor).

In the SCA, the term "scribe" can be used to describe one who does calligraphy, illumination, or both, in the style of the artists of our time period (pre-1600 AD). Calligraphy is the art of physically putting words on the paper or vellum. Illumination is the art done to decorate the page. SCA scrolls have very specific components which must be included, and the materials used must meet a certain level of quality.

Scribing in the SCA is a great way to share your artistic skills with your local group and your kingdom. Nearly every award given by royalty comes with a scroll. Scrolls are also used as invitations, thank-you notes, and prizes. A great number of scribes are needed to produce literally hundreds of scrolls annually. The Kingdom Tyger Clerk of the Signet is in charge of assigning scrolls for the royalty, and she/he maintains a list of scribes willing to do work for the kingdom, and their relative levels of expertise.

Beginning scribes are encouraged to speak to their local A&S Minister who can recommend workshops, introduce them to practicing scribes who are willing to teach illumination and/or calligraphy, or arrange for the Tyger Clerk to view their work.
